Richard J. (Dick) Hosey, 79, of Skaneateles, NY and Nokomis, FL, died at home Friday, May 17, 2013 following an eight month battle with leukemia. Born in East Brady, PA on December 8, 1933, Dick grew up in Rimersburg, PA. From an early age, sports played a big roll in his life; his father was a minor league catcher. At Union High School, Dick played football, basketball and baseball and he and his dad played baseball on the same town league. He served as a medic in the US Army from 1954-1956, but his army stories always focused on the Army traveling baseball and volleyball teams he played on. After leaving the service, Dick attended Clarion University on the GI bill. Even while working full time in a steel mill, and playing college baseball, he excelled and earned his BS degree in three years, graduating in 1962. Dick moved to Virginia and took his first teaching and coaching positions at Massanutten Military Academy. The next year, "Coach" Hosey moved to Skaneateles, NY, and began his 32 year career as a Science and Biology teacher at Skaneateles High School, where he met Sue, his wife of 48 years. He remained passionate about sports, coaching all levels of football and baseball for over 25 years, as well as a few years of coaching Girl's Tennis. He took up tennis and golf and was an avid fan of college and professional sports – especially the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. Dick was also a life long learner, completing graduate studies at SUNY Oswego and was awarded several National Science Foundation scholarships to participate in advanced Science Education programs. He also worked as a registered financial planner for the Legend Group for over 25 years. He was a long-time Rotarian and member of the Skaneateles Country Club. In his retirement, Dick spent many hours playing with and coaching his grandchildren in any sport. Dick kept busy with a part-time job at Calusa Lakes with his son, Jay. He played in several senior softball leagues until 2012, winning the Senior Softball World Series in 2003. Left with wonderful memories are his wife, Sue Van Order Hosey, sons Jay and Rob (Melanie) and daughter Stephanie (Paul Lagoe), seven wonderful grandchildren, his sister Marsha Shick (Ken), brother Rev. James N., Jr. (Jeanine), a large Van Order family, cousins, nieces, nephews, many good friends, colleagues, and even more former students and athletes. Dick felt blessed for the care and compassion shown him by the staff at Florida Cancer Center, Venice Hospital ACU and Tidewell Hospice. His family is incredibly grateful. Farley Funeral Home is in charge of cremation. A Celebration of Dick's life will be held from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday, July 28th, 2013 at the Skaneateles Country Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dick's memory to SAVES of Skaneateles, 77 Fennell St., Skaneateles, NY, 13152 or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238.
